Prosperity from the lens of Christianity

Prosperity is a kingdom reality. It is a reward and God himself desires both our physical and spiritual prosperity. However, physical prosperity can be a bait, a veil that the devil often uses to mask some spiritual realities from prosperity - hungry christians. Brother Paul in one of his epistles said "... I wish that thou mayest prosper even as thy soul prospereth ...". Here he was talking about both spiritual and physical prosperity. We can deduce from his words that God intends physical prosperity to be the dependent side (y-axis) of the whole prosperity graph.

Our physical prosperity should be determined by the prosperity of our soul. It hence becomes an error and of course a graph tending towards the negative x-axis if as a believer, you are physically sufficient and spiritually stranded!. Even if you never really liked mathematics in school, you would nonetheless have noticed that the negative x and y - axis of graphs are often omitted which means they are not so significant in plotting a positive curve ( used in this context to refer to a well rounded life). As you are seeking physical significance therefore tending towards the positive y - axis, if you do not likewise seek spiritual significance, you would be tending towards the negative x-axis  having no spiritual relevance. The truth is that the y-axis exists only because there is first the x-axis. My point exactly is that  the acquisition of all that can be called physical prosperity has a way of providing temporary satiety which is too quickly expelled by the natural insatiable nature of every human. Which means we are soon 'poor' again as our needs and majorly wants must have risen above whatever it is we have, then the Oliver Twist in us begins to cry out for more!.  What then satisfies?

Matthew chapter 5:3 reads "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven". The poverty described here is a state of mind that desperately desires to know more of something or someone ; a state of mind that makes no matter the level of possession look like nothing or rather a starting point for more. We are called to hunger and thirst for the entirety of God. Brother Paul had this state of mind so much so that even with all he knew of God he still said "... That I may know him...". You will naturally wonder and probably question his 'humbility ' but that is the result of a deep seated hunger... A yearning for spiritual prosperity.

Let us remind ourselves of Matthew 6 : 33; Every other thing is intended to be a bonus for God chasers and shouldn't be the object of our pursuit . We all must come to the understanding of how good physical prosperity is but how worthless it is when it is out of the confines of God. On the other hand, it is also a spiritual imbalance if as a believer you can't lay claim to any physical prosperity!. A deep study of Joshua 1:8 sheds more light on this. The earlier parts of the verse addresses spiritual exercise ;sowing into the spirit while the later part proceeds to say "... FOR THEN thou shall make thy way prosperous and then thou shall have good success". "FOR THEN... " which means not until you have made the word of God your companion and his presence your abode, you won't make your way prosperous. Ultimately your all round prosperity is in your hands... Develop a sincere craving for more of God, it is only God that satisfies (John4:14)... Seek God as a matter of LIFE and watch every other thing seek you as a matter of LIFE!
