PRESERVED (1)

Bidemi grew up on the streets of Lagos and home for her was often the space under the staircase of an uncompleted building. A lonely teenager who couldn't understand why life presented only the odds. Her father died when she was just two years of age ... Her mother was too devastated.. She was just too young to be widowed... 28!. Life seemed to pause for two years but seemed to only continue afterwards for her mother alone as she soon met this tall, dark and handsome man who presented to be the cure for her loneliness. One thing soon led to another and soon she was  sitting up a four year old Bidemi to inform her of her decision to get married to the new man... "Uncle Tunji will be your new daddy" was all she could say to get the preschooler to understand... Of course her approval wasn't needed... What did she know?...
The relocation to Uncle Tunji's house was quite swift... No gown, no cake, no rice... Just a faded gold ring on her mother's finger which he said was the most precious of his possessions as it was passed on to him from his mother to give to any woman his heart so cherishes just as his Father did. Caught up in the euphoria of love everything made perfect sense to her love-drunk mother, he was all she needed... Not the knowledge of where his family is, who they are, or why she was not properly married... Not even her little four year old mattered as she, Bidemi, gradually faded in the shadow of their love. Bidemi was just five years old when she became a major topic of discuss in their relationship
"I said she is possessed!... And I don't want to see her again. Period! " Tunji roared
" Don't you think that's too cruel a thing to say of a five year old?! My daughter is not possessed! " She retorted
" Then get ready to leave with her! " He concluded as he walked angrily away from her.
One thing Bidemi's mother feared the most was losing another man... Leaving Tunji. She had blamed her dead husband for leaving her so prematurely, now his daughter was about to make her loose Tunji... That was not about to happen... She then resorted to taking Bidemi to several self acclaimed men of God and spiritualists who couldn't drive out "the spirit" which was of course,  not there. This continued for about five more years. After several sessions of deliverance that entailed Bidemi being flogged countless times, she decided she couldn't live anymore like this , she was ten now and she now understood why her step-father would stop at nothing to get rid of her, she had caught him several times trying to sneak into her room half naked but will suddenly run out for no justifiable reason and as usual the next morning will be hell for her with her mother pleading with him to give her more time to complete the deliverance.
Bidemi would have none of that anymore, she knew she wasn't possessed, her step-father was, but who would care to believe her. She made her decision. During one of those sessions, Bidemi waited for the aged pastor to close his eyes and then took off for the streets. Before they could realise, Bidemi dashed off so fast... She was gone. Her legs knew not where to stop, so she continued until she was sure no one had followed behind.... To be continued...
